New York Times asked Meghan Ryan, the director of college counseling at The Williams School in New London, CT regarding admissions advice for the class of 2013.

Admitted students: "make sure that ... you have sent your deposit to secure your spot and notified the other colleges to which you have applied to withdraw your applications"

Checklist for February:

1) "Finish the Fafsa [Free Application for Financial Aid] and Other Financial Aid Forms (such as CSS Profile)"

2) "Research Scholarships": you can use Naviance to search for scholarships or ask your guidance or college counselor to find the information. Please make sure that you meet the deadlines.

3) "Stay in Touch": send emails to your regional admissions representatives. This can help you to "tip the scales toward admission if you are a borderline candidate." You can wish them a happy new year or let them know your midyear grades were sent. If you have any new academic accolades, update them.

4) "Thank your college counselor and your teachers for writing your letters of recommendation, and for supporting you throughout this process"

5) "Stay engaged in the classroom and keep up your grades. All colleges require final transcripts to be sent after graduation."
